 Music is the poetry of the air. Music is your own experience, your thoughts and your own wisdom. The Annual Music Competition is thus conceived to provide a challenging platform for constructive intelligent musical interaction among our budding young talents. Competitors are given the chance to express their musical prowess and pit their skills against one another. Music is the medicine of the mind. It enriches, enhances and embraces life. Through providing a competitive landscape for our students, they are then able to heighten their awareness, love and understanding for music, thus achieving a more wholesome and well-rounded life. Apart from the conventional and most competitive Piano categories, other instruments like the Keyboard, Guitar, Violin and Drums also take centre-stage.
The Annual Music Competition is a highly anticipated and prestigious school event that has always garnered overwhelming response and support from our Ossia teachers, students and their parents. From 2009, for the purpose of making the competition more challenging and to further raise the performing standard among our students, the Piano Open category of the Music Competition was also open for the general public to participate in. The music repertoires of the competition were published in our school website and the registrations for participation were open in December each year. The pre-requite for participating in the Piano Open category is a pass in at least Grade 7 piano practical or its equivalent and the registration fee for the general public is $20. So far, the performing technique and stage etiquette have notably improved among the contestants.
It is heartening to note that we never fail to attract hundreds of hopefuls for the auditions that have to take place over 3 weekends to accommodate everyone. Students have shown stark improvement over these years as we witness their dedication and intense effort in the preparation of the competition. Distinguished judges and members of the audience are treated to yet another year of quality musical show-case, perfectly staged and presented with such grace and ingenuity that always draw thunderous applause. We are proud of our students for achieving yet another peak of excellence in musical appreciation. Well done!
The pressure to excel is, without a doubt, present in any competition. Nevertheless, winning should not be the top priority in music. Instead, this should be a time for self-reflection and humble feed-back. Students also gained insight into their musical progress, inspiration to create their own melodies, and the motivation to actualize their dreams.
For more transparency, video recordings of the music performance during the audition rounds and finals were made and the all the finalists were each given a free DVD copy of their performance recordings as souvenir.
All the proceeds from the ticket sale for the finals were donated to the charity as a gesture of social responsibility by our school.
