Music examinations are set in both
theoretical and practical formats. The
theory examinations typically cover
areas in musical notations, construction
of scales and composition etc, which
are taken by pupils regardless of the
instruments they play. The practical
examinations focus on their particular
instruments (e.g. piano, violin, guitar).
They cover areas such as playing set
pieces, scales, sight-reading and aural.
However, there is the contention that
graded examinations are inadequate in
measuring the indefinite elements of
music making. Some may even argue that
there is the danger that musicians will
tend to concentrate solely on spending
all time and energy to prepare for the
popular based examinations, neglecting
the basic appreciation and enjoyment
for music. However, we must agree that
music examinations are one of the better
ways to formally assess individual accomplishments.
It motivates the students as the rigorous
examinations provide a goal.
Most
examination boards impose very little
restrictions on the candidate who
enrolls for the particular grade of
examination as long as the candidate
feels comfortable with it. For example,
candidates may skip the preceding
grades and sit for higher grades.
For the ABRSM examinations, candidates
wishing to take Practical Grade 6
examinations must have passed their
Grade 5 Theory. There is no prerequisite
for any theory grades to sit for the
practical grades 1 to 5. Thus this
provides the breadth and depth for
the school to ensure that students
are exposed to a wide curriculum,
while at the same time achieving an
internationally recognized certificate
in music.
As we are one of the most established
and popular music schools in Singapore,
all of our regular music courses lead
